The base of the UN at Quart de Poblet in Valencia will employ local 1,200 people and 300 international staff.The First Vice-President of the Government, María Teresa Fernández de la Vega and the Secretary General of the UN, Ban Ki Moon, signed an agreement on Wednesday in Madrid for the establishment in Quart de Poblet of an operations center for the missions of maintenance of peace for the UN, the first of Spain and the second in Europe.
There will be 300 international civil servants in the organisation The new center, that was awarded to Spain in 2006, will give jobs to 1,200 people and will welcome in 300 international civil servants of the organisation to Valencia.
It will have a mission to plan, prepare, manage and direct the operations of peace for the United Nations and will assure the continuity and integrity the functions developed by the center of Brindisi (in Italy), serving as support to the work of 90,000 civilians and military personel in the different operations that the international organisation maintains anywhere in the world.
María Teresa Fernández de la Vega has stated that Quart de Poblet, Valencia and Spain have from today, extra prestige, international presence, initiative and employment.
