2008 saw 68.2 million travellers on the Valencia Metro

FGV registered 224 vandalic robberies and 875 acts in 2008 in Valencia. There is the popular BIG BROTHER program with 400 cameras monitoring the metro system on the stations and the trains of Ferrocarrils of Valencian Generalitat (FGV) . They record everything what happens on the Metro interior 24 hours a day.

Thanks to this security system, their 130 security men acted in a total of 7,000 incidences, according to sources in the FGV.  Of these, 224 were robberies and thefts, with the majority taking place on the longest Line 1, which is 90 kilometers long. This was 1,000 incidences more than 2007.

In addition, 875 acts of vandalism took place which consisted of graffitti (3.1%), stoning of the trains (4%), aggressions against the facilities (4%) and permanent stickers (private and personal) (1.4%). Also 735 incidents took place to users due to diseases, falls or accidents on the mechanical stairs. The rest of incidences that took place waere fire alarms, intrusion or false alarms (a 4.8%), entering of the facilities by drug addicts (1.4%) and fires in zones near the route (0.7%).

In addition, 38.9% of these 7,000 interventions took place because of the bad behaviour of travellers in failing to fulfill certain norms, like smoking or begging.

Finally, a 28% of the activities were at the ticket barriers. Altogether, 2008 saw 1,000 more incidents than in 2007, according to FGV, more than the increase in traveller numbers. Metrovalencia reached 68.2 million travellers in  the past year, a 0.93% increase on the previous year.
