It was rumoured that all properties in Spain will be able to have telephones connected by 2004/5.  However, at present many properties here don't have them so most people have to use mobile phones or others systems such as satellite or radio telephone.  If you have a radio telephone (TRAC) system, then you will receive priority to get a normal land line, but you have to ask them.  You should go to a Telefonica shop and complete a request form.  This can be for either a new line or a change from TRAC to a Landline.

However, if you telephone 1004 and wait until a voice comes on the line and then ask "Por favour hablas Ingles?" they will then put you through to their English speaking department who are most helpful.

You will need to have your passport, NIE details, address and bank details ready.  The cost in Dec 2002 for line connection is €99 + IVA (VAT) @ 16% and it's still about the same.

An Alternative Telephone Solution.  The Internet is no longer the domain of the ‘computer expert'! In fact it has become an essential part of life for most people of all ages. It enables us to easily stay in contact with friends and loved ones, arrange travel plans, and securely manage our finances from the comfort of our own homes, wherever that may be.

For many, the dream of a home in Spain brings with it the acceptance that we may have to manage without the Internet, and all the benefit's it offers.    Until recently this was unfortunately the case. Now due to the rapid improvement of telecommunications in Europe, it is easy, economical, and secure to access the Internet using mobile technology.

Account packages cost only €30.00 per month.  SIM cards on the Vodafone network including full instructions in English, at €25.00 including €18.00 call time.  Check for current offers, as they are always changing!

What is GPRS?

GPRS technology provides you with a fast, permanent secure data connection using your mobile phone, giving you the freedom to access the Internet wherever and whenever you want. Use it to send and receive e-mail, surf the web, and access secure banking.

GPRS stands for General Packet Radio Service. It keeps you permanently connected to the Internet but, only charges you when your phone is sending or receiving data, which means that thinking and reading time is free. It's also fast - GPRS works at similar speeds to a dial-up modem.

So, what is GPRS Internet access?

Vodafone Internet Access uses GPRS technology. This system has been around for some years as a pre-requisite of the forthcoming 3G technology.

What do I need to do to get connected?

You will need a Vodafone contract, with the correct phone. Last year the phone was on offer at only €45.00 with a contract.

A PC or laptop computer.  Your mobile phone, the data cable, the appropriate software, and arrange your user account and email address.

There are a number of GPRS price plans - simply pick the one that suits your needs and add it to your standard pay monthly price plan.

Country WIFI

And finally, a new solution based on WiFi, which was initially tested near to Montserrat and is being rolled out further. In our personal experience it is more relaiable than Telefonica and twice as fast!   We run three PCs/Laptops, all with email and Internet, as well as two Skype phones connected to the computers , as well as a hands-free Skpe phone connected directly into the router.  We had teh fixed lines disconnected and since then have opertaed our business entirely on Country WIFI!   It gives security and availability of the services.   The uptime is outstanding and they even text when doing planned maintainance.
