Valencia's Holy Grail was a royal payback

22 July 2010

Description:

The Valencia Life network reports...

A recent study has revealed that the Holy Chalice arrived at Valencia Cathedral in the fifteenth century as part of a payment of the debts by Alfonso V The Magnanimous towards the church.

The monarch was apparently unable to pay a large sum of money that the church had loaned him for his military campaigns.  On March 18, 1437, he handed over all the religious relics in his possession, including the Holy Chalice that tradition says was used by Jesus Christ at the Last Supper.

This revelation was made by Professor Vicente Pons,  the archivist at Valencia Cathedral and published in the latest issue of The Cathedral of Valencia, officially refuting traditional thought that the Chalice was a gift.
