Description:
Shoppers at the Habaneras Commercial Centre in Torrevieja had a treat in store, as they were able to enjoy shopping while listening to a selection of great music and helping the people of earthquake torn Haiti, in what was the penultimate event in the Alzheimer’s Association fund raising campaign.
The main idea of the campaign was to raise awareness of those people who are now without homes, living in tents in what is now a mud city because of the seasonal rains.
On Saturday afternoon 20th March, the Vega Baja Big Band performed brilliantly with a variety of the music of the big band era – Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong, with a piece of Tequila music and rock’n’roll tossed in for good luck.
This well-known band is composed of a mixture of veteran musicians that have provided music for the past fifteen years or so; music that is easy to dance to at weddings and other celebrations.
On a break from his cruise work, vocalist and pianist Simon John led a trio in several songs, including his imitation of Elton John.
Councillor Lola Sanchez was on hand to thank all those who have helped, particularly those foreigners who have given willingly in so many instances.
In the late afternoon, vocalist Tony Kelly kept the mood going with a selection of songs that suited his admirable voice, while gorgeous girls shook their huchas coaxing money from shoppers.
The evening ended with the fabulous music of the Keith Monk Jazz group, who have been playing now for several years in the area.
The same girls donned costumes the next day to entertain hundreds of children in the municipal theatre in the final two shows of favourite cartoon characters for the same Torrevieja for Haiti project. Mickey Mouse joined forces with Los Lunnis, Sponge Bob, Batman and other favourite film and television heroes to animate the children and make them aware of the need of those less fortunate than themselves.
A big thank you must go to all those AFA volunteers led by the insatiable Matilde, and all the many performers and artistes who gladly gave their talents and services free throughout this month long campaign.
