Special Music for Los Costaleros
It’s not enough that Torrevieja is proud to have the world’s first International Cofradia but now, they even have their own tune to lighten the load. The Director of Union Musical Torrevejense has written a score that the band shall play as the 100-strong Los Costaleros carry their float, Jesus en la Oración el el Huerto de los Olivos (Jesus in the Garden of Olives) through the streets of Torrevieja during the Semana Santa processions. Its first public performance shall be at Inmaculada Church on March the 26th.
Jamie Belda, the Director of Union Musical Torrevejense has composed ‘Costeleros del Huerto’ especially for Los Costaleros. Graham Knight, the Captain of the float was “both delighted and surprised by this great honour.” Other Cofridia’s also have their own compositions to carry to but this one is especially significant in this sixth year since Los Costaleros first entered the scene.
Los Costaleros have a contingent of around 80 members at the moment but it takes 100 shoulders to carry the 1,500 kilos through the streets. A call is going out for another 20 or more strong men to boost the numbers and share the honour of being a Costalero. They practice on Thursday evenings at 7.00 pm for 7.30 pm, at the Semana Santa Museum which is behind the Los Arcos Restaurant in Torrevieja.and anyone interested will be made most welcome, be they come alone or in a group. Members and prospective members are also reminded that on Sunday March 14th at Museo de la Semana Santa “Tomás Valcárcel Deza”, there will be the celebration of the Eucaristia at 1300-hrs.
