"Valencians, raise your banners, the Falla season has begun," was how Maria Pilar Gimenez the Falla Queen heralded the new season atop the Serrano Towers last night after being handed the Keys of the City by Mayoress Rita Barbera, as the moon shone down.

It was almost impossible for anyone who lived in the City to sleep late yesterday, as on the dot of 7:30 an immense Mascleta of some 300,000 fireworks shook the area, clearly showing that the Fallas are beginning, with the Pirotecnica Valencia undertaking another Mascleta at midday in the Town Hall Square.
