The Valencia Life Network reports...Yesterday about sixty thousand people gathered near the Veles i Vents building for the inauguration of the 33rd Americas Cup that today will see the first of the titanic duels between the Giant catamarans. Present at the celebrations yesterday was Francisco Camps, the President of the Valencian Community as well as Valencia Mayoress Rita Barbera.
A giant Paella was offered at five Euros a plate, with the money going to the Haitian disaster, and a fifteen minute Mascleta also took place that used seven hundred kilos of explosives.
Later this morning the two giant craft will wend their way seawards for the first of three confrontations to decide the ownership of the most prestigious sporting trophy in the world.
Meanwhile a court in Madrid is expected to ask for a 24 year jail, term for Iker Aguirre Bernadal, who has been accused of assembling information on the Americas Cup in 2007 and of trying to plan a bombing attempt during those races. The main protagonists were arrested on a train as they journeyed from Montpellier in France to Cartagena.
