Tourism has always been a rich source of income for the Valencian Community, but in recent years there has been a growing trend of another sort; health tourism under which the Valencian Health Services offer free health care to foreigners and non-residents.

This type of health tourist comes to the autonomy mostly from countries within the European Union and uses a vacation to also undergo health treatment and in some case operations, all of which are paid for by the Valencian Government. the latest information is that over a hundred and forty-two thousand people have undertaken this type of tourism, at a cost of over two hundred million Euros, 45 of which resulted from free care for foreigners, some of which may be recuperated from health services overseas.

However, tthe largest portion still remains with the Valencian Health Service, and last year these foreign patients cost fifteen million Euros in medical visits, ambulances and medication that seems unlikely to be recuperated by the Services in Valencia.
