Another victory for La Vila!

07 December 2009

Description:

We are happy to announce another victory for La Vila.  It was a tight away game against Gernika, with the final score reading 11-10.  This was a valuable win for La Vila, as it secures our position at number two on the log.

La Vila Rugby Club came home victorious after a tight match against Gernika in the Basque Country on Sunday.  The nail-bitingly close 11-10 result, in what was La Vila’s final game before the end of the year, leaves the team as a strong contender for the league title.  The next half of the season is going to be intensely competitive – with the first game in January against current top of the log, El Salvador.

After the first forty minutes of Sunday’s game, predictions for a La Vila win would not have been very likely – Gernika was leading 10-0.  With not a single point scored, and La Vila’s defence broken through twice by Gernika, resulting in two tries (9th and 33rd minute of play), it seemed that the incredibly muddy ground had bogged down Vila’s performance.

However, much to their credit, the team managed to turn things around during the second half.  Despite an early setback, with Federico Samartano being forced to withdraw after a severe blow to the head, Aaron Cruikshank’s try 8 minutes in heralded a new wave of determination for La Vila.  Although the try was not converted, kicker Agustin Gómez was later able to secure three penalty points, bringing the score up to 10-8. Gernika’s early lead began to slip through their fingers, as their visiting opponents slowly narrowed the score.  As the tension rose in the final minutes of the game, Gómez sneaked another kick between the poles, providing La Vila with the invaluable last few points needed for victory.

La Vila is now situated in second place, eight points behind leaders El Salvador of Valladolid.  With the league about to break for Christmas, there is a short period of breathing space for Vila to rest up, work on rehabilitating injured players … and to study their upcoming opponents.  Although they are leaving the first half of the season on a high, the team will have to bring themselves back down to earth in the New Year for more hard work and tough competition.  If El Salvador is Goliath, then David needs to be ready.  The big game, La Vila vs El Salvador, will take place at 12pm on Sunday 10th of January 2010 at the Villajoyosa Stadium.  Don’t miss out!

On another, equally positive note, La Vila is very proud to announce that a number of their junior players have been incorporated into the prestigious Valencian Selection.  This team includes the best juniors selected from the Valencian region, who will play against other selection teams from across Spain.  Players Reece Groom (who plays at number five and eight), Ciaran Armstrong (who plays 15 and 12) and Laurence Smith (who plays at number five and eight), as well as Oliver Ricketts, Juan David Quintero and Kevin Hansen, have been chosen in their respective age-groups for their outstanding talent and visible potential as future senior rugby players.  Perhaps La Vila has some future Spanish national players in the making!

Some La Vila youngsters have been selected for the Valencian Rugby Selection - we are very proud to have such talented individuals bringing up the standard of Spanish rugby from the bottom up, so to speak.
