Description:
La Vila Rugby Club enjoyed another away-game victory against Pegame Bera Bera on Sunday. With a healthy final score of 20-30, and the team now re-established at second of the log, there is much to be optimistic about.
After stumbling last week in their game against Valladolid VRAC, La Vila went into the game with increased respect for their Basque opponents. The good fortune of fair weather seemed a positive omen, and La Vila started on a strong foot. Agustin Gómez was back in kicking form after last week, scoring two penalties within the first five minutes. Bera Bera put the pressure on though, intercepting a pass and scoring the first try of the game. It was around twenty minutes into the game that La Vila really began to wake up and smell the proverbial coffee. Adrenalin rose, Pedro Pico scored, and Gómez converted without wavering. La Vila continued to break the defence of their opponents, with another converted try by eighth-man Matt Cook shortly before the end of the first half. Helped along by another penalty from Gómez, the game broke at half-time with La Vila 17-23 in the lead.
Minutes into the second half, La Vila scored another try, compliments of their nippy fly-half Paul Burton (again converted by Gómez). The game continued from this point without drastic happenings: Bera Bera managed to reduce the difference with a penalty, but thereafter the marker was not moved by either side. Mike Denbee and Burton went off with injuries, requiring change of positions. While La Vila had chances to extend their lead and push for a forth bonus-point try, the right moment did not materialise. Bera Bera played with intensity, with a strong forward pack, but the deserving victors of the day were clearly those playing for La Vila.
This coming Sunday’s game will be a big one. The boys will be coming to heads with their rivals CRC Madrid, who currently tie with La Vila for second place in the league. First on the log, El Salvador, is a challenging 7 points ahead, and it is certain that both Madrid and La Vila will have their eyes on that elusive top position.
The home game against Madrid will take place at 12pm on Sunday 22nd November at the Villajoyosa Rugby Stadium. As usual, food and refreshments will be for sale, and under 18’s get in free. For more information, please contact Jo le Roux at the Rugby La Vila offices 965 890 376.
