Fancy a new hobby?

I went to the UK in March to see my two daughters and my new Grandaughter.  Whilst there, we did something every day. On one of the days we went walking via Newbury Racecourse, over the railway line and on up the canal.

Before we went, my Son-in-Law, Angus, downloaded some GPS co-ordinates onto a special Garmin GPS wrist watch. (About 100 pounds)  These were from http://www.geocaching.com, a brilliant site for this hobby.
 
Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups, with a strong sense of community and support for the environment.

The idea is to find a GEOCACHE and SHARE the experience.  Once you have found a geocache, sign the logbook and return the geocache to its original location. Afterward, share your geocaching stories and photos online!

Angus picked out 6 Geocaches for our route, but we only found three and we abandoned searching as there was a storm brewing. In the second Geocache, under a canal bridge was a "Travel Bug" which you are meant to take away with you.  So, they signed the book in the Geocache Box.  (The "cache" is usually a Sealed Plastic Container). When they got home they entered "The Find" on the Geocashing site and also found the Travel Bug from the serial number.  They reported that it was shortly to go on a plane journey.  We looked at it's previous adventures and saw it had been all over the UK but never abroad!

When we arrived home we logged on and said that the Travel bug was now in Valencia and that we would place it in another cache as soon as possible.

So, having registered myself as the temporary keeper of the "Travel Bug" brought over from Newbury in March, we set about trying to find a geocache near here.

I found a site near El Saler opposite the landing stages on Lake Albufera, which I knew, as I hadn't yet bought a GPS device.  I checked the coordinates on Google Earth and knew the exact spot. We took ourselves off to El Saler and Lake Albufera, parked up and walked.  The cache was given on the internet as being under a bridge.  When we got there, there were TWO wooden bridges.  After searching underneath both very thoroughly we came away empty handed!   The little travel bug was still in our keep. On logging on to the Geocaching site, we reported that we had not found the cache.  We then noticed that previously someone had reported it as "removed", meaning stolen.  It had been replaced, but perhaps it had been stolen again?

Meanwhile I bought a TomTom, which was a big mistake as you cannot download the Geocache site coordinates onto a TomTom.  You can to the Garmin Wrist watch that my son-in-law had and also to a Garmin GPS device. So I should have bought a Garmin and not a Tom Tom at Mediamkt!   Also, the TomTom had to be plugged in to my PC and due to a Tom Tom fault it wiped my Tom Tom free of all it's European Maps and Speed camera locations.  (They call them Safety cameras for some reason!).  It was over a bank holiday and I then had to prove that I owned the Tom Tom, which I did.  There was no hurry on their part and I even tried to phone them - Hung on for TWO hours!  The full sorry story is on a Guide2Valencia BLOG that I did to tell people about my dreadful Tom Tom experience.

Well, I am well over my word count, so I guess that there will have to be a part three!

A week or so later, armed with our TomTom that now had it's map put back, the following weekend we thought that we would try somewhere different.  I went on the internet and found a geocache site between Heron City and the Feria (Exhibition Centre).  We went on the Sunday afternoon and got to the spot. 

Unfortunately, as the TomTom was new I had put the exhibition centre coordinates in and not the GeoCaching site!  I think they call this a "CRAFT" moment!   Of course, we found nothing, so will try looking for this cache in the future, when I get a Garmin.

The week after I found a GeoCaching site in a large park near Lliria.  The TomTom tried to drive us through the park footpaths full of families out for their Sunday walks and picnics. So, we parked at the nearest car park and walked.  TomTom then left us at the nearest footpath that it thought was a road!  We didn't find the cache despite a few hours walking round.  Good exercise though!

The week after we went again.  This time I ignored TomTom and drove to the car park.  I then put the coordinates of the cache in and set it for walking. We then found the cache in next to no time! (Like 10 minutes!) We were so pleased with ourselves and I have the photos to prove it!  I left the Travel Bug in that cache and reported this on the website when we got home.

So, we learnt a valuable lesson.  Treat the afternoon out as TWO journeys.  Journey one to the nearest car park and journey two is ON FOOT to the coordinates given for the cache.

Finally, TomTom agreed to give us a map update for all the troubles we had and guess what. Yes, as soon as we connected TomTom to the internet it wiped all our maps and speed camera information off the device.  Our TomTom was once again useless.  So far we have had 19 faxes, 59 emails and several phone calls, so, I took it back in early July with a 76 page denuncia and told them to keep it!.  I still couldn't access their site  I am awaiting their advice.  I want to swap it to a Garmin.

With joining the GeoCaching.com site for about $30, every week I get lots of information about Spanish caches around the Valencia area. (You can set it to what you fancy). You can also pinpoint the exact coordinates on a Google Map that can be printed.  I also added my home location and then print out directions as to how to get to the cache location from home.

¿Le interesaría un nuevo hobbies?

En marzo fui a visitar a mis dos hijas y a conocer mi nueva nieta en el Reino Unido.  Mientras estuvimos allí, cada diadía hicimos alguna actividad. Uno de los días fuimos a caminar por el hipódromo de Newbury, cruzando en encima de la línea del tren llegamos al canal.

Antes de salir, mi yerno bajo de  http://www.geocaching.com, una pagina muy interesante para este hobby, unas coordenadas de GPS en un reloj Garrmin especial de muñeca (cuesta unas 100 libras).
 
Geocaching es un juego búsqueda de tesoros de alta tecnología que se juega por el  mundo entero por los buscadores de aventura equipados co dispositivos del GPS. La idea básica es localizar los contenedores ocultos llamados "geocaches" que se encuentran  al aire libre y luego compartir la experiencia con otros en la Web. Personas tengan un fuerte sentido de comunidad y de apoyo al medio ambiente y de todas las edades pueden participar en Geocaching.

La idea es encontrar un GEOCACHE y COMPARTIR la experiencia.  Una vez que se ha encontrado un geocache, hay que firmar los diarios de operación y volverlo a dejarlo el geocache en su lugar original. ¡Luego, compartes tus experiencias y fotos de geocaching en línea!

Angus seleccionó 6 Geocaches para nuestra ruta, pero encontramos solamente tres teniendo que abandonar la búsqueda por que se venia una tormenta. 

En el segundo Geocache, bajo el puente del canal encontramos un "geocache viajador" lo que significa que nos lo teníamos que llevar con nosotros a casa. Por lo que fírmanos el libro en la caja del Geocache. (El "cache" generalmente se encuentra en un contenedor de plástico hermético).

Cuando llegamos a casa entramos en el sitio web del Geocashing los detalles del "hallazgo" y con el número de serie encontramos el "geocache viajador".  La información sobre el mismo era que pronto iba a ir a  salir de viaje en avión. Mirando en los registros de los aventureros anteriores vimos que había estado por todos partes el Reino Unido pero nunca al exterior!

Cuando llegamos a casa abrimos una sesión en la web e informamos que el "geocache viajador" ahora estaba en Valencia y que la colocaríamos en otro cache lo mas pronto posible.

Así pues, habiéndome registrado como cuidador temporal de "geocache viajador" que vino desde Newbury en marzo, nos pusimos en marcha para encontrar un geocache cerca de aquí.

Nos fuimos hacia el Saler y La Albufera, aparcamos y fuimos caminamos. Sabia que había un geocache por allí cerca, aunque aun no había comprado un aparato de GPS, antes de salir había verificado las coordenadas en Google Earth y conocía el sitio exacto. El sitio estaba cerca de El Saler enfrente al muelle del lago de la Albufera, aparcado y andado.

El geocache que nos daba en Internet  indicaba que estaba bajo un puente, cuando llegamos allí encontramos que había dos puentes de madera. ¡Luego de buscar a conciencia debajo de ambos nos fuimos con las manos vacías!   Una vez en casa y entrando a la pagina web del Geocaching,  comunicamos que no encontramos el geochache. Mas tarde descubrimos que alguien ya lo había  denunciado previamente como "removido", lo que significa robado.  Este fue reemplazado, pero ¿habrá sido quizás robado otra vez?

Mientras tanto compré un TomTom, pero esto ha sido un gran error, ya que no se pueden bajar las coordenadas de las posiciones de los Geocache  con estos aparatos. Para esto puedes comprar un reloj Garmin como el que mi yerno tenía o un dispositivo GPS Garmin. ¡Por lo que debería haber comprado un Garmin y no un TomTom en Medimarkt!   También, tuve que conectar el TomTom a mi PC y debido a un fallo del mismo, se borraron todos los mapas y la ubicación de las cámara de velocidad de toda Europa  .  (¡Las llaman cámaras de seguridad por alguna razón!).  Esto ocurrió durante un día festivo, luego tuve que probar que era el propietario del TomTom, que así lo hice.  ¡Por parte de ellos no había ninguna prisa e incluso intenté hablarles por teléfono - esperando que me dieran una solución, tardaron DOS horas!  La historia completa de esta desafortunada experiencia está en el BLOG de Guide2Valencia ,que creé para informar a la gente sobre mi terrible experiencia con el TomTom.

¡Bueno, ya me he pasado más de la cuenta con el numero de palabras, por lo que veo que tendrá que haber una tercera parte!

Una semana más tarde, logramos que nuestro TomTom tuviera su mapa instalado, y el siguiente fin de semana estando este listo decidimos probar otros sitos diferentes. Buscando en Internet encontré un sitio Geocache entre Heron City y la Feria Valencia (Centro de Exposiciones). El domingo por la tarde llegamos al lugar.

Lamentablemente, como el TomTom era nuevo yo solo le di las coordenadas de la Feria pero no las del lugar del geocaching! Creo que le llaman a esto una "Metida de pata"! Por supuesto, no encontramos nada, por lo que intentaremos buscarbuscarlo este caché en el futuro cuando tenga un Garmin.

La siguiente semana encontré en un gran parque cerca de Lliria otro sitio de GeoCaching. El TomTom intento llevarnos a través de los senderos lleno de familias en sus paseos dominical y picnics. Por lo que decidimos aparcar el coche en el parking más cercano y caminar. TomTom luego nos llevo al sendero más cercano que resulto ser una calle! No encontramos el caché a pesar de dar vueltas y buscarlo un par de horas. ¡Aunque el ejercicio ha sido muy beneficioso!

Volvimos de nuevo la semana siguiente. Esta vez hicimos caso omiso de TomTom y fuimos directamente al parking. Puse las coordenadas del GeoCaching en la memoria del TomTom y salimos a caminar. A continuación, encontramos el caché casi inmediatamente! (en 10 minutos!) Estábamos tan contentos con haberlo encontrado que tengo las fotos para demostrarlo! Deje el "geocache viajador" en este GeoCaching y una vez en casa escribí el informe en el sitio Web.

Así pues, hemos aprendido una valiosa lección. Tratar el viaje como dos. Primero una travesía al parking más cercano y segundo un viaje a PIE al lugar de las coordenadas dadas para el caché.

Hemos aplicado esta filosofía al resto de nuestros viajes:
1. El Saler - Todavía no hay caché, pero ahora sabemos en que puente de madera esta!
2. Sant Vicent
3. Serra en la montaña (ver foto)

Por último, por todos los problemas ocasionados TomTom acordó darnos un mapa actualizado y adivinen que paso....

Sí, tan pronto como conectado el TomTom a Internet se borraron del dispositivo todos los mapas y la información de las cámaras de velocidad. Una vez mas nuestro TomTom es inútil. Hasta la fecha hemos enviado 19 fax, 59 correos electrónicos y varias llamadas telefónicas, por lo que, a principios de julio se los he devuelto con una denuncia de 76 folios!. Sigo sin poder acceder a su sitio Web y estoy a la espera de su asesoramiento. Quiero cambiarlo por un Garmin.

Cuando te registras en la Web del GeoCaching.com, por unos 30 USD, se puede configurar la ubicación que quieras y cada semana tengo un montón de información sobre los caches españoles en toda el área de Valencia. Puede localizar las coordenadas exactas sobre un mapa de Google para luego poder imprimirlo. También añadir la ubicación de mi casa y poder imprimir las direcciones de cómo llegar al caché desde ella.
