On 22nd October, the second edition of the Castelló Masters Costa Azahar gets underway. This tournament, taking place at the Mediterráneo Country Club in Borriol, will bring together top golfers from Spain and around the world. Over four days, the competition will turn the province of Castellón and the Region of Valencia into the world´s golfing capital. The success of the 2008 edition in terms of the organisation of the sports competition and its positive economic impact make this a unique sporting event and an opportunity to promote golf tourism in Castellón and the Region of Valencia.

 

With an economic impact of 18 million euros at its first edition, the Castelló Masters Costa Azahar has secured its position as one of the most important golf tournaments on the European calendar. Over 20,000 people attended the Castelló Masters Costa Azahar 2008, giving rise to 2,266 overnight stays in hotels, and 334 people were recruited for different tasks. The organisers are expecting to improve on these results this year as the second edition has an even more stellar line-up of players.

In terms of media attention, there will be an estimated 600 hours of television coverage, beaming the competition to around 550 million homes through the major European TV channels, making the tournament an exceptional showcase for the image of  Castellón and the Region of Valencia. At the 2008 edition, the mass media coverage of the event, through 35 channels all around the world, generated an audience of 550 million viewers throughout the world, with an economic repercussion of 12.44 million euros.

Golf tourism in the Region of Valencia

The Region of Valencia has an extensive golfing offer, with 75 accommodation establishments specialising in this segment throughout its three provinces. This tourist product, which has experienced major growth in recent years, attracts visitors with high levels of disposable income and is capable of overcoming the seasonal nature of tourism and invigorating tourist activity, which has positive repercussions on the Region of Valencia´s economy.

At a professional level, there are over 20 golf courses in the Region, some of which have been running for over 50 years. Furthermore, the Region of Valencia has the fourth highest number of members of the Spanish Royal Golf Federation (over 23,000), behind the regions of Madrid, Andalusia and Catalonia.

Public-private collaboration

Hosting top-level events such as the Castelló Masters Costa Azahar shows the firm commitment of the sector and the Administration to promoting golf tourism in the Region of Valencia, and enhances other important actions such as the agreement signed last March by the Valencian Regional Department of Tourism and IAGTO (International Association of Golf Tour Operators) for the strategic development of golf tourism in the Region of Valencia, and the First International Congress of Golf Club Managers, held last May in Benidorm.

The Castelló Masters Costa Azahar belongs to the PGA European Circuit, where top professionals from all around the world compete not only in Europe, but throughout the world, mainly in Asia, Oceania and Africa. The competition is organised by MatchGolf and is sponsored by the Valencian Regional Government, through its Department of Culture and Sport, Castellón Provincial Council, Castellón Airport and the Valencian Golf Federation.
