53.22% of Torrevieja’s population are foreigners!

Torrevieja’s population figures announced.

Torrevieja, the Valencian Community’s fifth largest city, now has a population of 103,265 citizens, down from a record number of 104,700 citizens from nine months ago. Councillor for Census and Statistics, Pilar González Cifuentes, delivered the statistics of which 53.22% or 54,958 are of foreign nationality and 46.78% or 48,307 inhabitants are Spanish.

For those that love their numbers, there are 117 Nationalities represented on the Padron of which the UK is still number one (it’s nice to be number one in something) with 12,917, followed in a not so close second place by the Germans with only 3,817. Other major population groups include Russia (3,353), Morocco (3,206), Sweden (2,784), Norway (2,213), Ukraine (2,213), Bulgaria (2,180), Rumania (2,162), Colombia (2,139), Finland (1,20), Belgium (1,417) and Italy (1,095).

Good news for the ladies though, if you are looking for a man, in that there are almost 2,000 more men living in the city than women, with 50,663 ladies (49.07%) and 52,602 men (50.93%)!

Back in the 1980’s Torrevieja was still looked upon as a small fishing village of only 12,000 inhabitants rising to 23,192 in 1990, doubling to 50,189 in 2000 and another 53,000 residents though today. No need to worry though as the population has only dropped by 1,435 residents, many of whom where Latin American migrant workers plus a few Northern European who have returned to their homelands due to the economic crises, health benefits and loss of pension returns due to currency exchanges.

However, Torrevieja also registered more than 100 new school students this September, a possible sign that the city is now attracting younger families rather than those who have come to retire. It should also be noted that these are Padron figures. It’s estimated that at least another 60,000 unregistered residents live here for the majority of the year. And how do we know this? Just drive around and count the number of micromesh or satellite dishes!
