A taste of the Gota Fria to come!

While the sun continued to shine around Torrevieja early last week, those around El Altet Airport, Alicante City, San Vincent de Raspeig, Denia, Javea and to the south in Murcia, experienced a taste of what could happen should a Gota Fria arrive this year.

Spanish press reported that as much as 40 litres of rain per square metre fell within one hour on Wednesday afternoon, causing the Airport to close for a while, bringing down power lines, sweeping one woman to her death when she was trapped inside her car which was dragged into an irrigation pond, close to Polaris World in Torre Pacheco.

Elche was also hit hard, with parts of the A-70 closed for a while due to freezing hail stones accumulating on the road, while damage to local crops, cars, windows and shutters was reported on Spanish TV. Other freakish weather conditions were captured on a security camera in a Javea restaurant, where the roof and windows were ripped off by a Tornado, which ran along the beach on Tuesday afternoon. 

After experiencing the hottest summer for half a century, weather experts are predicting a higher than average chance of the province experiencing a Gota Fria. Torrevieja experienced her last ‘small’ Gota Fria in 2003 and implemented a training program for local emergency services and the town’s ‘Proteccion Civil’. That year, the infamous ‘gota fria’ left 90 litres of rainfall per square metre as water and ice fell onto the town in abundance. The Proteccion Civil, who are responsible for coordinating such potential natural disasters, continue to ready themselves and test their emergency plans should such weather conditions return.
