Ronnie Biggs: The Inside Story

Love him, loath him, couldn't care less about him, it's hard to ignore him; Ronnie Biggs. Only two weeks ago, the bed- ridden, small-time criminal, was approved for Parole by the Parole Board, only for Justice Minister Jack Straw to step in and personally overturn that decision.

 

This is the same Jack Straw, who back as 2007 tried to put pressure on the independent sleaze watchdog to drop plans for an inquiry into the abuse of MPs' expenses! The same Jack Straw who on learning that MPs' expenses would be made public, sent a handwritten note to the fees office confessing that he had spotted an error and enclosed his cheque to refund the money!

 

While Biggs may or may not deserve to languish in Prison, or at present in hospital with a broken hip, it should be noted that last year, Straw approved the early release of two sex offenders under controversial measures to free up space in overcrowded jails. In 1999 he proposed that all sex-offenders should be electronically tagged for life and ironically in September 2000 his brother William was convicted of indecent assault on a 16year old girl. So it came as a shock to the family and friends of Biggs' that he was refused parole as he is in such poor health that he may not live to see 82, when Jack Straw says he can reapply for parole.

 

And what is the point of all this? It's simply the fact that a new book has been published by Apex Publishing entitled ‘Ronnie Biggs: The Inside Story'. Over the years, many books and films have covered the story of the Great Train Robbery but this book is different from the rest as it recounts conversations made during prison visits over an eight-year period by author Mike Grey.

 

Last week, Mike was interviewed for Television by the Euro Weekly News, which can be seen next week on www.costablancatv.com. And for those that would like their own personally signed copy of the book, or to chat with Mike, he is making a return trip to San Pedro del Pinatar, where he shall be based from August 29th through November 7th.
