Line 1 of the Valencia Metro is criticised three years after the fatal crash

Criticism of the Metro after the crash in 2006. 

Yesterday marked the third anniversary of the tradgedy and people are concerned that the promises have not been fulfilled.

In 2006 43 people died and 47 more wounded when a Metro Train went off the rails between Spain and Jesus staions.  The company put it down to excess speed by the driver, who also died, but there were promises that something would be done about the bad bend where the train derailed.

It is said that nothing has been done, yet the works had to start at the end of 2007 and to be finished in 2008.   The Council Chief for infrastructure has stated that it is very compliacted and takes time to plan this elaborate construction project.  However the FGV company have emphasised that beacons have been installed along with automatic guidance systems to make this section safe. 

The president of the Association of the Victims has stated that the safety measures are not up to the same standards as lines 3 and 5.

There is also disatisfaction that the new extension to La Fe Hospital on Line 1 has not taken place and the plans have been consigned to a drawer somewhere.  This hospital extension started in 2003 and is almost completed, yet is now without a Metro line.

The new hospital will be one of the greatest hospitals in Europe, with 1,200 beds, all in single rooms, in an extension of 190,175 meters square (the equivalent to 24 football grounds) and a budget of 270 million Euros.  Yet for all this, there will be no Metro from Spain on Line 1 to the La Fe Hospital.
