From the 20th May to 7th of June at the Teatre PrincipalValencia goes flamenco
Flamenco al Principal, the fourth edition of flamenco performances presented by Valencian Theatres (Teatres de la Generalitat) comes charged full of magic and spirit. From 20thMay to 7th June, the centre of the city will see samples of extraordinary flamenco art, that Valencia holds dear. Singing and dancing are the dominant themes in this year’s performances that take place at the Teatro Principal, in the heart of Valencia.
Flamenco al Principal opens with all the action of Pitingo, 20th to 24th May, whereby Soulería will present their new show that offers a unique fusion of pop, flamenco, soul and gospel. Soulería is a daring blend of traditional flamenco (trilla, granaína and fandango) mixed with hits by Bob Marley, The Beatles, Police, Otis Redding, Ray Charles and Nirvana, among others. The spectacular will include the Blake Heritage Singers choir and will be accompanied on stage by audiovisual projections.
A succession of Flamenco styles, or palos, include bulerías, tangos, zapateado, jaleos, martinetes ...-, will be mixed together, as the New Spanish Ballet showcase their new work. 'Blood', the result of dynamic staging and choreography, is calling into the Teatre Principal from the 28th to 31st May, at 9pm (Prices: 24€-12€). The company Rojas & Rodriguez, brings a balance between modernity and tradition that is sure to please all fans. 'Blood' works on different levels with pasos a dos and solos, combined with male and female performers that creates a synergy the company is renowned for. The performance by Rojas & Rodriguez, denotes the “talent, creativity and quality" of the directors, choreographers and principal dancers of the New Spanish Ballet, that gives the performance “free rein to improvise, ensuring a unique and unrepeatable moment.”
The dancer and choreographer María Pagés performs from 3rd to 7th June (at 9pm, prices: 24€-12€) ‘Autorretrato’, or self-portrait. Both the direction and choreography are by Pagés, who at the moment is creating her "most personal and intimate" performances yet.
Pagés was born to a choreography that was asked by Mikhail Baryshnikov to perform for the Baryshnikov Arts Center (BAC), from which she derives her show’s main ideas – divided into four parts based in a study, home, the dressing room and the stage – starting with a soleá and moving to farruca.
