Valencia Metro to Install more cameras to combat vandalism

As there have been more frequent incidents of vandalism in the 153 stations and stopping places of both metro and tram, the FGV (Ferrocarrils of Valencian Generalitat) from next year are to install security cameras to try to eradicate these problems and to provide the stations with more security.

There have been a lot of problems with the ticket machines which are out of order when passengers come to use them.  One of the things frequently causing problems are blockages in the coin slots.

Up until now, the network of Metro Valencia has a total of 400 cameras in all the underground stations, trains and trams.  Thanks to these existing cameras FGV detected 875 acts of vandalism and 224 robberies in the past year.  The new cameras will be installed during the rest of this year and throughout 2010. 

In addition, all the public address systems will renewed and digital remote indicators will be added to inform passengers of expected train arrivals.  Besides the above planned improvements, FGV hopes to improve the 24 stations and 19 stopping places on Line 1. This action includes the reform of the old buildings, works of accessibility by means of approach ramps, as well as new furniture and more illumination.

The 21st May marks 15 years since the re-introduction of the street car in Valencia. In order to commemorate it, FGV carried out a survey yesterday where  93% considered the tram a success. Nevertheless, it surprised the authorities that the majority thought that trams had not reduced the traffic, the noise, nor the pollution. In addition, it is the third most popular means of transport, after the car and the bus.
