Valencia's Air Nostrum will reduce its workforce by over 26%

Air Nostrum will reduce its workforce by over 26%.  589 staff to be shed by Air Nostrum, the Valencia based airline.  The company will reduce its fleet, flights and services in a bid to save 11 million Euros. 

Air Nostrum will reduce its workforce by 589 people, which is more than 26% of the present 2,250 workers, within a plan to combat the crisis in which it will reduce it's fleet, flights and services to the passengers. This was justified because of a deterioration in demand. In an official notice, the Valencian company has justified the amendments to its forecasts for 2009 because of the fast and significant deterioration in demand of passengers. This plan of action was put to the workers representatives on Wednesday by the delegated advisor of Air Nostrum, Carlos Bertomeu.

In particular, the airline anticipates trimming the service in tourist class to eliminate the non-profitable routes.  It will also reduce its fleet by 10 airplanes, to cater for a reduction of 18 percent of their the flights. They will also operate with one stewardess instead of two on planes of fifty seats.

This cut in routes and number of flights, whose aim is according to Air Nostrum a way to fit their production with the new (lower) demand.  The cuts will take place between May & October.

The diminution of the fleet by ten planes will also have a knock on effect in the technical area and in the operations area, with a proportional part of the personnel in their offices and general services.

11 million Euros saving

The saving anticipated with the application of these decisions, according to the company, will be more than 11 million Euros. In addition, the company will have a period of negotiation with the representatives of the workers in order to analyse another package of measures, like wage reductions and relaxation of their conditions, that allow them to reduce the costs by a different method.
