Mercadona, Alcampo and El Árbol, are the chains with the lowest food prices.  In the analysis by cities, there is a difference of 18% in the purchase of a basket of food.  El Corte Inglés, Hipercor, Supercor, Eroski and Caprabo, are the most expensive.

Cities with the cheapest food basket


Avila and Orense are the cities with the basket of the cheapest purchase, in front of Las Palmas in Gran Canaria and San Sebastián.

The lowest price supermarket chain

Mercadona presents and displays the supply of food products with the lowest prices between the food distribution companies in Spain, followed by Alcampo and El Árbol.  This is from the data of the Observatorio de Precios del Comercio Minorista  corresponding to the first quarter of 2009 announced this Monday by the Secretary of State of Commerce, Silvia Iranzo.

Prices by Type

In the ranking of prices by types, in fourth place is Maxi-Dia, next appears the French group Carrefour, Supersol, Sabeco, Carrefour Express and Eroski. On the other hand El Corte Inglés stays as the company that operates with a greater level of food prices, followed by the other two in the group, Hipercor and Supercor, and of the Eroski supermarkets in the centre.

Nutritional Products

The difference of prices in the supply of nutritional products between the different chains is 31%.  The cheapest are Alimerka and Ahorramás, followed by Mercadona. The Ministry visited 4,189 establishments and analised 187 products of 35 types, in a total of 54 cities.

Packaged Food

In packaged food, the differences fluctuate between 13% and 45% based on if " is a basket of "Standard Purchases" (with outstanding products of manufacturers of more frequent consumption) or of a basket of "Economic purchases" (formed by products of lower price). In the case of fresh products, the variations of prices reach a 69% in fruits and vegetables, 59% in fish, and a 48% in meat. Saving of 37%.

Analysis by Cities

In the analysis by cities, there was a difference of 18% in the basket of food purchases between the cities with the prices most reduced (Avila, Orense and Teruel) and the cities with the highest prices (Las Palmas of Gran Canaria, San Sebastián and Gerona). They emphasised that the saving that can be obtained by a the citizen buying the economic food products packaged in relation to the standard basket, oscillates between 20% and 37%, based on the city where they are based.
