EU set to penalise Spain for not stopping land abuses

According to a report by the Valencia Life Network, the European Parliament is to vote on Thursday as to whether to freeze funding to Spain as a result of land abuses that have been denounced in Brussels by various EU citizens.

The motion has been elaborated by Margrete Auken from Denmark, and demands that all payments to Spain be suspended unless all new urbanizing plans are revised and those that do not guarantee property rights, do not respect the environment and do not adhere to EU laws are cancelled.

The initiative already has the opposition of the Spanish Socialist and Partido Popular MPs in the Parliament.

In Valencia they had a law called "LRAU" which came under much criticism when reported in "Land Grab" cases in the UK press and TV.  In 2005 the old LRAU law was replaced with the new supposedly better LUV law and the EU then watched the situation very closely.  At the time, the EU believed that the LUV law did not go far enough to protect the owners, so were in a dialogue with the Valencian Parliament about it.

It would seem that this dialogue went past the Valencian Parliament and that the main Spanish parties are not supporting the EU.   However, it seems that EU are set to do something about it after 4 years of posturing.  We have heard similar stories before, so we shall see if the EU take action this time.
