Description:

Post Valencia Fallas reveals some problems and some interesting facts:  17,000 flowers stolen and 7,500 tons of rubbish removed after the Fallas in Valencia Spain.

The vandals took 17,000 plants in the Alameditas de Serranos.  The flower beds are completely empty of plants after the passage of the vandals - Not one flower was left!

The whole fallera week has left to 7,500 tons of rubbish that cost about 300,000 Euros to clear up.  There were three brigades of cleaners working in Blanqueries, Alfonso el Magnánimo y el Paseo Marítimo Valencia. The cleaning brigades not only have had to clear up after the Fallas but also deal with the 17,000 plants that were stolen and also the vandalism to flower pots and seats in various other places.

The workers replaced the plants every morning and, on the following day at dawn all had once again been taken. Altogether, the town hall had had to buy 17,000 plants urgently to clean up the centre of Valencia.  This operation cost more than 6,000 Euros. To this money it is necessary to add other 13,000 Euros to repair the damage brought about in the flowerpots and to fix other  damage in the gardens.   This included removal of the irrigation system as well as the plants.

1,300 workers on average have gone out every day to also clean up the public thoroughfare and had to face groups of vandals who had arrived and were aggressive.  This aggression included throwing bottles at the workers.

The damage also included urban furniture and the burning of 1,173 wastebaskets, which is 10% of all the wastebaskets in Valencia.  Then there were 103 large containers damaged.  All this will cost the city council 206,000 Euros to replace all these things.

1,853 tons of ash were left from all the Cremàs.  On the solid residues generated by this weeks fallera, the Dept. of The Environment emphasized that from March 14th to the 19th 7,500 tons had been in rubbish bins.  Of this, 2,717 tons corresponded only to the night of the Cremà, and 68.23% of that number -1,853 are ash-gray and other residues of the adorned streets, whereas the rest is the normal rubbish originated by the residents.

New this year, the town hall has realised of experimental form door to door collection of selective residues in 43 fallas in the areas of Russafa, Cirilo Amorós and the district of the Carmen.

Local Valencia Police rconfiscated several tombola hams due to health risks, after a local resident complained.  Police also seized 221,902 firecrackers of various types in the inspection of 187 permanent or provisional premises used for the sale of pyrotechnics. Local Police also confiscated 1,600 wheelbarrows and mascletas. Since the beginning of month the police also carried out checks of motorcycles and mopeds. In these inspections they have reviewed 7,688 vehicles of two wheels and have issued 216 tickets for not having passed the ITV and another 40 because their drivers did not wear crash helmets.
