Description:
RequenaA wine-producing region with roots deep in history. The La Vila quarter was declared a Spanish Heritage site and has an especially old flavour with its stately homes, splendid Gothic facades and bodegas. In Requena, wine is culture. Under its streets, many old houses have caves, some open to visitors, which have been put to a number of historical uses, though mostly for storing the wine of each years harvest. This wine-producing tradition is complemented by an extraordinary inland cuisine boasting locally produced sausages, as well as stews and other recipes that help combat the dry climate of these lands.
Requena Town
Requena is a municipality in the eastern part of the province of Valencia, located on the left bank of the river Magro.
The town was formerly a Moorish fortress, occupying a strong position in the mountainous region of Las Cabrillas (1000 meter).
It is dominated by the ancient citadel of the Moors, and still has traces of the original town walls.
There are three ancient parish churches; San Nicolas, the oldest, dates from the 13th century, but was partly restored in 1727.
Near the town are the sulphurous springs of Fuentepodrida.
Surrounded by mountains, the locality is covered with vineyards, the basis of its economy.

The Sausage Fair in Requena!
This Sausage Fair in Requena is usually held on the second weekend in February each year. It is now one of the most respected winter fairs in the Region of Valencia. It maintains its original objective of promoting the traditional products of Requena and striving for quality.
In 1995, Requena’s sausages earned the Region of Valencia Product of Quality citation, a recognition that guarantees goods are artisan made from natural products.
The fair has become an important gastronomic event not only because of the high quality of Requena’s delicatessen, but also because of the effort and care with which the delicatessen artisans and business people of Requena have dedicated to it over the years, as well as the warm way in which fair visitors are received.
The fair takes place in tents set up in the Plaza de San Juan Grandía and on Avenida del Arrabal, next to the memorial to grape harvesting, Monumento Universal a la Vendimia. The purchase of a ticket allows a visitor to sample sausages, cured, roasted or fried, as well as bread rolls, with fried eggs, ham, cheese and tomato, and other local delights, along with some of the famous wine of Requena.
The event guarantees that visitors will find many surprises, including street parades, a rock festival, competitions, samples of fresh barbecue grilled sausages and grilled pork with accompaniment, supervised by the chef José Becerra; plus, the 2nd Recortadores Tauromachy Skills Contest, correfocs fireworks, dancing and theatre.
In addition, on the days of the fair, an amusement park will be set up for children, and guided tours will be given of the Cuevas de la Villa caves, the Municipal Museum, the Museo de Arte contemporáneo Florencio de la Fuente, the Salas de Exposiciones, the Molino de Esther mill, the Parque de la Naturaleza Fauna Ibérica natural park, the Museo de Sisternas and the local wine cellars.
