Description:
In Spain there are three branches of the Police force: -1. Municipal Police - Policia Municipal/Local or Guardia Urbana
These are to be found in towns with a population of over 5,000. They wear blue uniforms with white chequered bands on their hats and sleeves and deal with minor crimes such as traffic offences, protection of property, civil disturbances and the enforcement of municipal laws. On the spot fines can be imposed for a range of offences.
2. National Police - Policia Nacional or Cuerpo Nacional de Policia
They are stationed in towns with a population of over 20,000. They wear brown uniforms and deal with serious crimes such as theft, rape and muggings, and are also used in crowd control. The Policia Nacional is housed in a Comisaria de Policia (police station), many of which have an "extranjeros" (foreigners) department dealing with matters such as Residence Cards.
3. Criminal & Traffic Police - Guardia Civil.
They deal with major crime and also patrol Spain's highways and rural areas, often on motorcycles, and deal with road accidents. They also act as immigration officers and frontier guards. They wear avocado green uniforms and olive green caps and as you would imagine in that colour are a military force.
If you need to contact the police in an emergency you should telephone: -
062 - for the Guardia Civil
091 - for the Policia Nacional
092 - for the Policia Municipal/Local
112 - for other emergencies telephone
If you have the misfortune to have to report a crime, go to the police station with one of the people we recommend for the Translation Services - They will save you hours of grief. They will also take you to the correct police station!
A good number for an English Speaking help
We have however been advised of an alternative! You phone 902-102-112 - This is a National English Speaking Police line. They will take your details in English and type in a report in Spanish that will be sent to a local police station near where you live. They will discuss this with you and advise which Police Station you need to go to. The report will be there on the local Police Station's PC system for when you arrive in person. A brilliant service we are told.
