Description:
All over this area the restaurants cater for the Valencian style of eating, which is as follows: -1. Desayuno (morning coffee at home) 7 am to 8 am
2. Almuerzo (late breakfast) 10 am to 11 am
3. Comida (Lunch) 2 pm to 4 pm
4. Merienda (afternoon Tea) 5 pm to 7 pm
5. Cena (Evening Dinner) 9 pm to midnight and after!
Consequently you will find that all the local people stop work at these times and go to their favourite restaurant. Even the "poshest" restaurants in the area cater for workman and offer three course lunches with drinks and coffee included at incredibly low prices. This is known as the "Menu del Dia" lunch.
For example this is offered in many restaurants all over Valencia Province. Here you can have a three course lunch with a glass of wine and coffee for only €7.50! Don't even ask for the A La Carte menu during the day, as you will be wasting your money!
Usually you are offered a choice of three starters (Entrantes), three main courses and three desserts. (Postres), plus a coffee afterwards. Drinks are also very cheap and if you drink beer, ask for a jug "Una Jarra" de cerveza and in some places, it will come to under €4.00, saving on smaller glasses glasses and saving time keeping ordering smaller quantities! The house wines are also very good.
Obviously in the evening you will pay more and may run to €20 or €30 per head.
In Valencia City the menu del dia will be a little more expensive and if you go to traditional beach tourist spots we have known it to be 20 € a head! Our advice is therefore to go to restaurants frequesnted by workmen and pay a lot less and usually the quality is excellent.
